Snowflake Administrator

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Snowflake Administrator to manage, maintain, and optimize our Snowflake Data Cloud environment. The ideal candidate will be responsible for Snowflake platform administration, security and access management, performance monitoring, cost optimization, data governance, and operational support.

The candidate should have strong hands-on experience with Snowflake administration and a solid understanding of cloud data warehousing, database concepts, security, and data platform operations.

 

Key Responsibilities

Snowflake Administration

  • Administer and maintain the Snowflake environment, including accounts, databases, schemas, warehouses, roles, and users.
  • Configure and manage Snowflake virtual warehouses based on workload and performance requirements.
  • Monitor Snowflake platform health, usage, and overall performance.
  • Manage Snowflake upgrades, new features, and configuration changes as applicable.
  • Support production environments and resolve Snowflake-related operational issues.

User, Role & Access Management

  • Create and manage Snowflake users, roles, and role hierarchies.
  • Implement Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) and enforce the principle of least privilege.
  • Manage authentication methods, including SSO and MFA, where applicable.
  • Review and maintain user access and permissions in accordance with organizational security policies.
  • Support user onboarding, access changes, and offboarding activities.

Performance & Workload Management

  • Monitor query performance and identify long-running or inefficient queries.
  • Analyze warehouse utilization and recommend appropriate sizing and scaling strategies.
  • Configure warehouse auto-suspend and auto-resume settings.
  • Work with data engineers and developers to troubleshoot performance issues and optimize workloads.
  • Monitor concurrent workloads and resource utilization.

Cost Optimization

  • Monitor Snowflake credit consumption and storage utilization.
  • Identify opportunities to optimize warehouse usage and reduce unnecessary costs.
  • Implement cost-control measures such as resource monitors and usage alerts.
  • Provide recommendations for efficient warehouse sizing and scheduling.
  • Prepare regular reports on Snowflake usage and cost trends.

Security & Data Governance

  • Implement and maintain Snowflake security best practices.
  • Manage data access controls and security policies.
  • Support data governance, auditing, and compliance requirements.
  • Monitor access and administrative activities using Snowflake logs and audit capabilities.
  • Assist with security reviews and compliance audits.

Data Operations & Support

  • Support data loading, unloading, and integration activities in collaboration with Data Engineering teams.
  • Monitor data pipelines and investigate data availability or access issues.
  • Troubleshoot issues related to databases, schemas, stages, file formats, and data sharing.
  • Support Snowflake data sharing and secure data exchange where required.
  • Assist with backup, recovery, and data retention requirements.

Monitoring & Troubleshooting

  • Monitor Snowflake usage, queries, workloads, and system activities.
  • Investigate and resolve user access, performance, connectivity, and data-related issues.
  • Perform root cause analysis (RCA) for recurring production incidents.
  • Maintain incident records and contribute to continuous service improvements.

Automation & Continuous Improvement

  • Automate routine Snowflake administration tasks using SQL, Python, scripting, or other automation tools.
  • Work with DevOps and Data Engineering teams to improve deployment and operational processes.
  • Support Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) and automated provisioning where applicable.
  • Identify opportunities to improve platform reliability, security, performance, and operational efficiency.

Documentation & Collaboration

  • Maintain documentation for Snowflake architecture, configurations, access controls, and operational procedures.
  • Develop administration runbooks and troubleshooting guides.
  • Collaborate with Data Engineers, Data Architects, Developers, Security, and business teams.
  • Provide guidance and support to users on Snowflake best practices.

 

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in Snowflake administration, database administration, or cloud data platform operations.
  • Hands-on experience administering Snowflake Data Cloud environments.
  • Strong understanding of Snowflake architecture, including:
    • Databases and schemas
    • Virtual warehouses
    • Roles and RBAC
    • Storage and compute concepts
    • Data sharing
    • Resource monitors
  • Experience with Snowflake security and access management.
  • Strong SQL skills and experience troubleshooting database queries.
  • Experience monitoring and optimizing Snowflake performance and costs.
  • Knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Understanding of data warehousing and ETL/ELT concepts.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Snowflake certification, such as SnowPro Core Certification or other relevant Snowflake certifications.
  • Experience with Snowflake integrations and data engineering tools.
  • Familiarity with ETL/ELT tools such as Informatica, dbt, Matillion, Fivetran, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with Python or scripting for automation.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD and DevOps practices.
  • Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform.
  • Familiarity with data governance and compliance frameworks.
  • Experience working in a cloud-based enterprise data environment.
