Database Startup Failure: Root Cause and Resolution

Recently, our team resolved a database startup issue in a Progress OpenEdge production environment.

Issue Overview

The database became unavailable after all configured After-Image (AI) extents were filled, and no empty AI extent was available for reuse. During database recovery, the startup process attempted to switch to the next AI extent, but the operation failed because all available extents were already occupied.

As a result, the database could not complete its recovery process and remained offline.

 

Investigation

Our analysis identified that AI archiving and replication processing had stopped recycling AI extents. Over time, this led to the exhaustion of all available AI space.

Since the database requires an available AI extent during recovery, the startup process terminated when no empty extent could be allocated.

 

Resolution

After verifying the availability of database backups and archived AI files, the team performed the following actions:

  • Disabled replication and AI archiving services.
  • Cleared and reinitialized the AI extents.
  • Re-enabled AI management and replication.
  • Started the database successfully.
  • Reinitialized the replication target and verified synchronization.

The database and replication environment were fully restored, and application connectivity was validated.

 

Improvements Going Forward

To avoid similar incidents going forward, we are implementing:

  • Monitoring for AI extent utilization.
  • Alerts for replication delays and AI extent availability.
  • Regular validation of replication and archive processing.
  • Periodic reviews of backup and recovery procedures.

 

Current Status

The database is operating normally, replication is synchronized, and all dependent applications are functioning as expected.

This issue showed the importance of monitoring critical database components and verifying recovery processes regularly. The improvements made will help prevent similar issues in the future.
